MOMENTS | Rehash: #FBF Watch Kanye West Freestyle at Real Deal, a Tiny but Legendary London Record Store

We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.

Father’s Day is coming up, and since Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their second spawn (who they will not be naming ‘South’), we’re revisiting pre-fatherhood Kanye’s early freestyle with John Legend and Mos Def. You know, before he was falling asleep during the “Frozen” Disneyland sing-along show for North West’s birthday. The freestyle in question took place at Real Deal, a renowned record store for the hip-hop scene in London. Though the store closed down back in 2007, the infamous open mic sessions once hosted performances from music icons like Amy Winehouse, Mos Def, Ghostface Killah, will.i.am, and of course, Kanye West. Storeowner Vincent Olutayo had previously resurrected the record store via pop-up, and now he has released the video archives too.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift said that that she listens to Kendrick Lamar’s “Backstreet Freestyle” to “go from feeling victimized to feeling awesome”. Lamar returned the compliment by freestyling over the beat of “Shake It Off” for the hosts of Dallas radio station K104.
“I love that song,” said Lamar in an interview with The Fader , “I ain’t playin’”. And that wasn’t the only time the critically acclaimed rapper had expressed his mutual respect for the pop star songwriter. As he told the Associated Press in an interview, “I appreciate Taylor Swift for supporting not only my music but just the hip-hop culture. There’s really no gap. It’s music and it feels good.”
