Okay, so if you haven’t already heard it, the Father John Misty cover of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” might just be the best cover of 2015 (thus far, at least). Of course, in the last 18 months, we’ve also heard him perform six other covers, which include his take on Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” Cat Stevens’ “Trouble“,” Johnny Cash’s “Baby Easy Ride,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on the Wire” and “I’m Your Man.” NME spoke the Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman, about why he chose to cover Arcade Fire’s 2010 anthem. Voicing a sentiment that is very much in line with his hyper-intelligent, albeit rather surly persona, Tillman’s explained, “On the Internet it gets spun into, like, I just fucking love doing these covers, I’ve got so many under my belt,” he says. “[As if] I just love whipping them out at a moment’s notice, and regaling the Internet with re-appropriated music… but I do love that song.”

1. Mix & match like the best of NYFW. The best street style we saw didn’t resist the bitter NYC cold snap; combine more practical pieces like denim and even duck shoes with patterns, bright coats and fur jackets.

Joshua Tillman, aka Father John Misty, shared his haunting acoustic cover of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box,” which was recorded during a session for Sirius XMU. Though it’s a bit odd to hear the fuzz rock hit without Kurt Cobain’s rasping howl, Fender guitar and distortion pedals, Tillman’s sparse delivery puts a folk spin on the song while staying faithful to the In Utero classic.
