MOMENTS | Meme: Dads Are The Original Hipster, Remixing and Rehashing the Styles of the ‘70s x the ‘90s

We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.

Father’s Day is tomorrow, so in honor of all the dads and their classic dad fashions, we’re reposting our fondness for Dads are the Original Hipsters. It’s a pretty self-explanatory blog that features the dads from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, all of whom were rocking the facial hair, thick-rimmed glasses, and the mix-and-match patterned clothing coveted by hipsters today. It’s kind of passé to make fun of hipsters, so we’re rehashing this meme #TBT out of love—mostly for the dads who were too cool before it was even a thing. Fashion and style are always taking cues from the past; the silhouettes from the ‘70s popped up again in the ‘90s, and in 2015, we’re still working through our ‘90s obsession. Here’s to the badass dads who killed it in their flannels, cycling caps and blasé attitudes.

Amy Arbus, daughter of the legendary Diane Arbus and protégé of esteemed fashion photographer Richard Avedon, has been capturing street style well before the time of digital photography—before fashion blogs and Instagram allowed for instant style gratification. In the ‘80s, Arbus started as The Village Voice’s style photographer and captured the eclectic styles of every figure in New York subculture, from Madonna and Phoebe Lègére to Andre Walker and The Clash pre-fame. In an interview with AnOther Magazine, Arbus talks about what inspires her and tells the story behind some of her most iconic images.

MOMENTS | Rehash: #TBT ‘Heathers’ Turns 26 Years Old Today, Celebrate By Revisiting Its 5 Best Quotes

We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.

Heathers, our favorite cult classic movie and the original Mean Girls, turned 26 years old today, and we’re making it a throwback Tuesday! The movie has Winona Ryder at her best—the good-hearted girl next door served with side of bitter snark. As everyone knows, our mean girls of Heathers also have killer wardrobes we wish we could replicate pretty much every day of our lives. In short, the deliciously dark teen drama has our favorite 90s It girl (and Shannon Doherty too), a twisted plot with a mounting body count, and the best quotes. It’s the 26th anniversary of Heathers! We’re celebrating with our 5 favorite lines.

BAMIN NOTES | Trend: Fresh Dressed Documentary, the History of Hip-Hop Through The Lens of Fashion

Fresh Dressed: The Revolution Of Fashion Born On The Streets, a documentary that explores the evolution of hip-hop through the lens of urban fashion, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend. Directed by Mass Appeal’s creative director Sacha Jenkins and co-produced by Nas, the film combines old-school video footage with insightful commentary from icons like Big Daddy Kane, Kanye West, and Pharrell Williams. Jenkins takes the viewer on a journey through the history of hip-hop and fashion; from the ‘70s South Bronx B-boys’ custom outfits to ‘80s hip-hop tailor of Harlem Dapper Dan’s remixed clothing to the ‘90s mainstream rise of urban sportswear and its on-going influence on the modern day.
