In a culture obsessed with Internet porn, virtual reality, and vanity, Mykki Blanco's music video for "Loner" fits right in. In collaboration with Nicopanda and Pornub, the music video, directed by promising newcomers Anthony&Alex, strives to define the digital age we inhabit. Present throughout the video is the lack of intimacy, replaced by the desire for it. Dancers blinded by VR headsets seek intimacy while the sublime vocals of Blanco and Jean Deaux intertwine in the background. The entire narrative reads like an episode of Netflix's Black Mirror, a kind of Twilight Zone reality defined only by an absence of human connection. At it's core, "Loner" isn't a dystopian projection of a distant, technology-laden future, but rather the very tangible, reality of present day.
