MOMENTS | Mash-up: Indulge Your Inner Romantic with Sam Smith & Mary J. Blige’s “Stay With Me” Duet, then Get Cynical with “Please Go Home” Parody
We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.
Pop-soul artist Sam Smith was nominated for six Grammy Awards and won four of them: Best New Artist, “Stay with Me” for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and In the Lonely Hour for Best Pop Vocal Album. In celebration of his well-deserved wins and because Valentine’s Day is coming up, we’re revisiting our favorite remixes of “Stay With Me.” Maybe you’ve got a sentimental heart, or maybe you’re more of a cynic—there’s a version of “Stay With Me” for every kind of romantic.
Mary J. Blige joined Sam Smith for a “Stay With Me” duet at his New York Apollo Theater show back in June 2014, and we definitely swooned over the sound of their combined soulful vocals. We were doubly delighted when Blige and Smith teamed up again to perform the emphatic hit at the Grammy’s.
Of course, if you’re feeling a little cynical or just a bit cheeky, there’s always Mean Girls star Daniel Franzese’s parody “Please Go Home.” It certainly conveys the opposite message of Smith’s original, but it’s also so very true to life—the one night stand go awry, and you really really just want last night’s mistake to leave. The video is also a hilarious recreation of the original video, and we have to give major props to Franzese’s impressive singing voice too.
