MOMENTS | Mash-up: Kelela Transforms Into a Neon Animated Character in “A Message” Music Video
We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.
R&B singer Kelela has announced a May 5th release for her Hallucinogen EP, a six-track EP that will tie us over while we wait for her forthcoming debut LP, which will be out this fall. As a sneak peak at what to expect from her Hallucinogen, Kelela shared her visually stunning music video for “A Message,” an Arca-produced track that “spilled out” of the two in 25 minutes during a three-day intensive collaboration. The Daniel Sannwald-directed video was made with i-D Magazine and transforms Kelela into a virtual creature.
In a press release, Kelela describes Hallucinogen as a six-track life cycle of a relationship wherein each track moves through each stage: “rejection and amputation,” “domination and empowerment,” “feral lust and longing,” “rebirth and recovery,” “delirium and ectasy,” and finally, “the payoff.” “A Message” covers the stage that comes before lust and empowerment—the “rejection and amputation” phase of a relationship. As for her creative process, Kelela explains, “[It’s] been like a sculpture that I’ve come to and refined over time, adding a lyric here, refining a melody there, adding a bridge, etc.”
May 6th couldn’t feel further away, but until then, we have her gorgeous “A Message” music video.

Kelela’s music video for “A Message” is shrouded in darkness with only spurts of eerie light before it morphs into Kelela’s neon anime hallucination. We want our duffel to capture some of the neon green, but we’re mixing it with some blue leather for something darker.
