Rick Famuyiwa‘s Dope was the big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and the film just released its experimental trailer. The trailer is a seamless mash-up of psychedelic animation, social media, 8-bit video games and actual footage from the film. The mash-up nature of the trailer is a pretty accurate tonal representation of the film’s retro, ’90s hip-hop loving, and modern social media obsessed protagonist Malcolm (Shameik Moore). As Famuyiwa states, “We wanted it to look like something that would be created by Malcolm and his friends.” Dope is a coming-of-age-story set in Los Angeles’ Inglewood, though like most well made movies, there’s a little more to it than that.

In a conversation with Vulture, Famuyiwa explains the intention of the experimental trailer: “In many ways, a teaser trailer these days has just become a short version of the full-length trailer, as opposed to something that grabs you and teases you and makes you go, ‘Whoa, what is this?’ This trailer really is a piece unto itself, a throwback to traditional teasers.” Dope will be out in theaters June 12th, so mark your calendars. Until then, we’ll always have its delightful mash-up of a trailer.
