Punk rock legend and indisputable style icon Iggy Pop turns 68 years old today, so we’re celebrating the occasion by reminiscing over some of his iconic looks. Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg, Jr. in Muskegon, Michigan, rocked some pretty radical styles, and as he points out, “I did really debauch myself to achieve a visual at the time.” For the first Stooges concert, he wore a maternity dress, white face, and an aluminum Afro wig. Later, he would incorporate transparent plastic trousers, snakeskin, body glitter and frequent shirtlessness. Iggy’s shirt-free preference had a more practical purpose, as it was “[to] get closer to you. It just gets across, like a lonely sax. It reaches in a way that works for me.

To this day, Iggy Pop’s blend of the feminine and punk is still a defiant look. Of course, Iggy has no shits to give about his defiant look: “I’m not ashamed to dress ‘like a woman’ because I don’t think it’s shameful to be a woman.” It’s definitely one of the raddest things he (and anyone) has said about giving the ol’ finger to conventional styling.

We’re wishing Iggy Pop a happy 68th birthday, so go watch him perform “Lust For Life,” the most famous, and arguably the best, song of Iggy Pop’s solo career.
