Rihanna put out “James Joint,” a musical interlude from her upcoming album, “in celebration of 4/20,” the annual holiday celebrated by weed lovers around the world. We’re pretty sure the musical lovechild of Rihanna and Frank Ocean would sound something like “James Joint,” which is to say, we’re really vibing the brief snippet. We all know that for the dedicated stoner, everyday is 4/20, and in true stoner form, Rihanna actually released the track a day after the international weed holiday. Of course, it’s also entirely possible that her team assumed those who would appreciate “James Joint” would be too busy toking up to listen to the song.
There hasn’t been an official release date for Rihanna’s upcoming album, but if the recent trend of impromptu album drops à la Beyoncé and Drake are anything to go by, it’s probably going to be an unannounced surprise. We know those 70 seconds of Rihanna probably won’t be enough, so take another moment to rewatch her music video for “American Oxygen.” The politically charged video blends footage of RiRi against an American flag with iconic media footage of the Ferguson protests, the Civil Rights movement, 9/11, riots, protests, and more.
