MOMENTS | Mash-up: Taylor Swift’s Star-Studded, Neo-Noir Music Video For “Bad Blood” Also Happens To Be A Kendrick Lamar Remix
We’ve curated the best of digital age-inspired creativity—from user-generated content, mash-ups, and remixes to collaborations between multi-disciplined makers.
That’s one way to send a message: Don’t f*ck with Taylor Swift (sucks to be you, Katy Perry). In the off chance that you didn’t watch the endless celebrity cameos in Taylor Swift’s Sin City-inspired music video for “Bad Blood,” the fact that it’s also a Kendrick Lamar remix is the only motivation you need to check it out. For the video, Lamar named his character after viral star Welvin Da Great and contributes two previously unheard verses to the 1989 track. And we can’t help but wonder if he’s sampling from his own “Backseat Freestyle” when he raps, “All my life I got money and power/ and you got to live with the bad blood now.” Let’s just take this moment to enjoy how the biggest names in pop and hip-hop seem to get enough of a kick out of each other’s music to band together for “Bad Blood.”
Joseph Kahn, the director responsible for “Blank Space” and some of the most iconic videos from Britney Spears’ early 2000s heyday, directed the neo-noir and star-studded “Bad Blood.” Between the Tarantino vibes and the Sin City-esque opener, there are sci-fi and noir references galore in the music video. However, our favorite moment is probably the Tron light cycle shout-out between Swift (as Catastrophe) and Alba (as Domino), seconded only by Hayley Williams in a Leeloo costume from Fifth Element.
The video’s narrative begins with Swift and Gomez (as Arsyn) throwing down some martial arts to take out some goons, before Gomez betrays Swift and kicks her through a window. This, obviously, leads to a training montage featuring all of Taylor Swift’s best friends, from supermodels Karlie Kloss, Gigi Haddad, Martha Hunt, Lily Aldridge and Cara DeLevingne to singers Selena Gomez, Hayley Williams and Ellie Goulding. Actresses Jessica Alba, Hailee Steinfeld, Zendaya Coleman, Lena Dunham and Serayah McNeill made appearances too. The video is topped off with a brief catwalk from supermodel Cindy Crawford, and Swift’s favorite TV stars and her cats’ namesakes, Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”) and Ellen Pompeo (“Grey’s Anatomy”) dropped in for a badass head nod. In other words, when you mess with Taylor Swift, expect to come up against her bas self and her high-profile squad.
